I did check Snopes.com to make sure that this is true. It will give you all the details of the fraud and might keep you safe in the future. As a general rule, unless you make a call to a well-known company, DO NOT give ANY private information to a company that solicits you. Whether it is your bank, credit card company, or a regular store that you shop from and can order from either online, by phone or through a catalogue. If someone calls you from any company that you are familiar with, or any that you aren't familiar with, either tell them you need to call them back and hang up, or just hang up. Then, dial the number provided to you on the back of your card or catalogue and start asking questions. Take whatever steps are necessary after that to safeguard your identity.
As for this particular scam, check here for yourself: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/creditcard.asp
