During this semi-down time as the Writers Strike continues, I am watching a lot of Tivo picked movies. I watched a few good ones and a few stinkers this long Holiday weekend. Props to Prime and The Jacket! Those were two movies that had me hooked. Prime is a romantic comedy with Uma Thurman, Meryl Streep and October Road's Bryan Greenberg. It was funny and it actually surprised me at the end. I can usually guess what will happen at the end of a movie. I was wrong in a very good way this time. I am not a huge fan of Uma Thurman. I guess her movies are ok but, I just don't get her as a sex symbol or someone people lust over. But, she worked this role really well. Bryan Greenberg, on the other hand, is hot and I was happy to see him in that role. I never knew of him before October Road and it was nice seeing him in something else. I like him as an actor and, he is nice to look at!
The Jacket! Wow! I like Adrien Brody. He is charming and, oddly hot in my opinion. Again, Keira Knightley is not one of my favorite actresses either. But, she warmed up to the role and I enjoyed her in this film. The thing is, this is a movie that is sort of right up my alley, which is probably why my Tivo picked it for me, but, I don't recall ever seeing anything about this movie. No previews and I haven't read anything about it. Oddly enough, I watched the movie and not even 24 hours later, I was watching some entertainment news show and they were doing a tribute to Brad Renfro. They listed what he was in throughout his short life and The Jacket was on that list. I can't say that I remember his character in the movie but, how weird is that? I never heard even one word about The Jacket and then suddenly, inside of 24 hours, I watched the movie and heard it mentioned on another show I was watching!
Anyway, The Jacket is captivating. Usually, I have the attention span of about split second by split second increments. What that means is that, I am constantly checking how much time I have left in a movie before it comes to an end. It was only when I had to go somewhere that I checked to see how much more time I had left in The Jacket to see if I couldn't watch the end of the movie before I had to go. I only had 15 more minutes left which means that I made it through almost all of the movie before checking the time remaining! That is the mark of a really great movie...for me! I loved it!
Back to Brad Renfro. I also watched Apt Pupil this weekend. I really didn't like this one. I didn't hate it but, it just didn't captivate me, despite the material. It seemed sort of thrown together for me. I got the basic gist of him as a pupil who actually used what he learned in the end, but, it just didn't do it for me.
