I have watched Jericho since it first came on the air and was happy when it was given a re-birth. But, admittedly, I was thisclose to ending my relationship with it until 3 weeks ago. I just felt like the flavor of the show seemed less delicious since it came back but, the episode that I nearly deleted which would wipe it from my TV schedule, ended up wrangling me back in. And, then they killed off Bonnie. That was bad! Really bad! Then this week's episode ripped my heart out. Stanley, Bonnie's brother, was saying good-bye to her in the morgue. Good God was it moving. For those of you who don't watch the show, Bonnie is deaf (as is the actress who portrayed her). She and Stanley became tragic orphans at a young age when their parents died in a car accident. They have taken care of one another ever since and their relationship was about as strong as a brother and sister can be.
She was killed off last week when she fought to protect Stanley's Fiancee, Mimi, and their home, against the bad ass Ravenwood clan. They came in, guns blazing. Bonnie got a few rounds off shooting some of the Ravenwood boys down but, she was then shot and killed while an injured Mimi watched from a crack in their pantry.
Stanley stood over Bonnie in the morgue and spoke to her body using Sign Language. He told her he missed her and joked about how she would be making fun of him right then were she alive. He asked her to say hello to their parents and told her he loved her. It was devastating and heart breaking and beautiful and worthy of every award they can throw at them. I get a little lump in my throat just thinking about it now.
While I am not sure of the future of Jericho, I can say that the writing for that scene was so wonderful! I look forward to seeing the two more episodes left in this season and, if they don't come back next season, I hope that they get some kind of award nomination for the exceptional writing and acting of that one simple scene.
